Entrant Courses
01: Work in low risk confined spaces
(1 Day-Standalone-Entry level course)

NC1 Low Risk A low risk confined space exists where there is clear direct unobstructed vertical access, easy entry/exit, natural ventilation and unlikely to flood. When you stand up your head is above ground level so no fixed depths are implied. Candidates will check the atmosphere with a gas monitor prior to entry. If the gas monitor alarms, then do not entre and notify the entry controller immediately.
If a gas monitor alarms while working in a low risk confined space, the entrant will simply stand up and exit the confined space immediately and notify the entry controller.
Low risk confined spaces is the only place you can have a lone worker, but this requires appropriate procedures including man down alarm and constant communication.

02: Work in medium risk confined spaces

NC2 & NC3 Medium Risk This covers the requirements for most confined space workers who will simply be doing the work, but not controlling entry . A medium risk confined space exists when there are access issues; a realistic expectation of encountering a specified risk; possible introduction of specified risks during the work activity.
NC2 Clear direct unobstructed vertical access with continuous attachment to a winch or similar device. Normally down to about 3m and only one entrant inside the confined space. EBA (Escape Breathing Apparatus) will not be required such as benching work.
NC3 Clear direct unobstructed vertical access when it is not possible to have persons permanently attached to a winch line. This may be a deeper chamber or you are moving away from the entry point. Usually, it will be a team entry which moves away from the entry point such as sewers and utility service subway tunnels, aqueducts basements and tunnels.
This means exiting the chamber will take longer and a link person may be based at the bottom of the entry point
If the gas monitor alarms, do not enter and immediately notify the entry controller.
With NC3 medium risk environment, everyone must enter the confined space with their EBA (Escape Breathing Apparatus). Upon encountering a specified hazard, everyone will put on their EBA and exit immediately in a controlled manner.
EBA sets can be open circuit compressed air positive pressure EBA lasting 10-15 minutes. escape breathing apparatus with ten minutes nominal duration. Alternatively they may be closed circuit chemical rebreathers that typically last 30 mins to 4 hours

08: Work as a member of a rescue and recovery team in confined spaces

Delegates must have 6160-03 high risk entrant, should hold a First Aid qualification and be clean shaven
This qualification is about working in confined spaces as a member of a rescue and recovery team. An emergency team will need to be available when the risk assessment for a confined space determines that it is necessary.
Building on your high risk experience and your first aid skills, you will be trained in mechanical resuscitation, use or rescue stretchers and get hands on use of oxygen therapy equipment and AED. You will perform several rescue exercises starting with simply winching a casualty of a chamber. This will culminate with the recovery of a training dummy, putting them into a stretcher before removing them from the chamber and performing aftercare once outside. This will include all your newly learnt skills.
New paperwork will include the use of casualty evaluation forms and SMEAC form which details the rescue procedure.

09: Medium risk entrant and entry controller

By far the most popular and recogonised confined spaces course we run.
This meets both requirements of medium risk entrant and medium risk entry controller, done over two days with the same content as the 6160-02 medium risk entry course. The difference is you will be in charge of people entering and completing the paperwork. There will also be a longer question paper to cover the additional content.
You are responsible for ensuring the safety of your team and raising the alarm in the event of an incident.
